Anomalous Weak Values are Caused by Disturbance

چکیده

In combination with post-selection, weak measurements can lead to surprising results known as anomalous values. These lie outside the bounds of spectrum relevant observable, in canonical example measuring spin an electron (along some axis) be 100. We argue that disturbance caused by measurement, while small, is sufficient significantly affect measurement result, and this most reasonable explanation

Measuring measurement–disturbance relationships with weak values

Using formal definitions for the measurement precision and the disturbance (measurement back-action) η, Ozawa (2003 Phys. Rev. A 67 042105) has shown that Heisenberg’s claimed relation between these quantities is false in general. Here, we show that the quantities introduced by Ozawa can be determined experimentally, using no prior knowledge of the measurement under investigation—both quantitie...

Weak disorder: anomalous transport and diffusion are normal yet again.

We carry out a detailed study of the motion of particles driven by a constant external force over a landscape consisting of a periodic potential corrugated by a small amount of spatial disorder. We observe anomalous behavior in the form of subdiffusion and superdiffusion and even subtransport over very long time scales. Recent studies of transport over slightly random landscapes have focused on...

Anomalous aging phenomena caused by drift velocities

– We demonstrate via several examples that a uniform drift velocity gives rise to anomalous aging, characterized by a specific form for the two-time correlation functions, in a variety of statistical-mechanical systems far from equilibrium. Our first example concerns the oscillatory phase observed recently in a model of competitive learning. Further examples, where the proposed theory is exact,...

Weak values are universal in von Neumann measurements.

We refute the widely held belief that the quantum weak value necessarily pertains to weak measurements. To accomplish this, we use the transverse position of a beam as the detector for the conditioned von Neumann measurement of a system observable. For any coupling strength, any initial states, and any choice of conditioning, the averages of the detector position and momentum are completely des...

Reconstructing weak values without weak measurements

I propose a scheme for reconstructing the weak value of an observable without the need for weak measurements. The post-selection in weak measurements is replaced by an initial projector measurement. The observable can be measured using any form of interaction, including projective measurements. The reconstruction is effected by measuring the change in the expectation value of the observable due...
